I was born in Mexico City. In that seemingly infinite city I visited all the markets and most of those buildings that lock up secrets that I could not decipher. Countless times I was devoured and regurgitated by the orange serpent that, furious, runs through its entrails. I frequented basements, rooftops and cafeterias. I roamed the Reforma Boulevard at three o'clock in the morning, with its red floor tiles, its lit up buildings and the palm trees trying to sleep.
I partly grew up and came of age in Cuernavaca, in my family's enchanted hotel. This long gone place was completely covered by formidable trees, and inhabited by fairies and frightful ghosts. I puzzled at the world and the things in it. I loved learning and I learnt many things. One day I became an artist. As an artist, visual dichotomy and juxtaposition have been a constant subject of exploration. They've always fascinated me. I love a figurative subject inhabiting an abstract realm, a pencil drawing against a turquoise acrylic background, a religious image embracing a sexual thing. This is why I am so attracted to collage. Collage allows me bring together things, disparate from each other, and blend them without each element ever losing its individuality. The collages on display in this page are the product of a 12 week long process of self analysis geared to the production of 12 performance pieces based in subject matters that preoccupy me, and their relationship with my every day life: Uncertainty, Death, Birth, Identity, Fear, and personal history combined with the events of my life during that period of time: A workshop on Performance Art, an ill-fated love affair, a successful grant application, my father's illness, a soul cleansing, the raffling of several pieces of my work, dreams, conversations, books. The entire three months became a personal ritual and these collages are the illustrations of those times, taken from my personal diary. They are also the sketches for the performance pieces, some of which took place and some didn't. An international jury of curators selected the collages, to be part of The National Salon of Visual Arts in Mexico City, in 1998. Each image tells a complex and long story that together, one day, I might make into a book. Enrique Ferreol .
